TEACHING ASSISTANT・ACTIVITY LEADER


GRANVILLE INSTITUTE is looking for VOLUNTEERS to act as ACTIVITY LEADERS and TEACHING ASSISTANTS for our FLUENCY1st SUMMER CAMP FOR OVERSEAS TEENS.

The primary objective of these positions to is offer Vancouver YOUTH of approximately 14 to 25 years-old the opportunity to gain experience in LEADING and PLANNING TEACHING and ESL ACTIVITIES.

VOLUNTEERS will receive a REFERENCE LETTER detailing their activities, and may request a TRAVEL ALLOWANCE or a ACTIVITY ALLOWANCE (see below for details).

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

FLUENCY1st SUMMER CAMP FOR OVERSEAS TEENS combines focused classroom time teaching North American pronunciation and speaking with members of the local community to experience how North Americans communicate in real life -- which is where ACTIVITY LEADERS and TEACHING ASSISTANTS play a vital role.

This is a pilot project in its first year with TWO Japanese teens as students.

There are TWO VOLUNTEER POSITIONS for this PROGRAM:


  • TEACHING ASSISTANT: Encourage and facilitate natural North American communication
  • ACTIVITY LEADER: Design and lead ACTIVITIES that necessitate natural North American communication


SCHEDULING



TEACHING ASSISTANTS are welcome to work with STUDENTS during CLASSES for an hour or more any WEEKDAY AFTERNOON between 2:30PM to 4:30PM:

Informal Get-together


AUGUST 24 is an informal get-together with free food and drink for any VOLUNTEERS. TIME and LOCATION will be posted at a later date.



VOLUNTEER SUPPORT

OVERVIEW



All VOLUNTEERS are eligible to receive:


  • REFERENCE LETTER: Upon successful completion, a REFERENCE LETTER will be provided outlining your activities and contributions to the program.
  • TRAVEL ALLOWANCE: A stipend to help with commuting costs to volunteer with us. See details below.
  • PREP ALLOWANCE: A stipend to help with costs involved in preparation and supplies for designing and leading an activity. See details below.


TRAVEL ALLOWANCE



In addition to a REFERENCE LETTER, VOLUNTEERS can request a TRAVEL ALLOWANCE:

  • VOLUNTEERS can request C$25 TRAVEL ALLOWANCE per CLASS or ACTIVITY attended
  • Only one VOLUNTEER per CLASS or ACTIVITY can receive a TRAVEL ALLOWANCE
  • Each VOLUNTEER can receive a MAXIMUM of FOUR TRAVEL ALLOWANCES ($100)
  • VOLUNTEERS are free to attend additional CLASSES or ACTIVITIES without a TRAVEL ALLOWANCE to gain more experience


ACTIVITY DESIGN & PREP ALLOWANCE



VOLUNTEERS with special SKILLS or KNOWLEDGE can also apply to DESIGN and LEAD an ACTIVITY as an ACTIVITY LEADER:

  • Only the most suitable PROPOSALS will be chosen
  • ACTIVITIES that make the students LEARN a new skill through English commands and interaction, e.g. VIDEOGRAPHY
  • ACTIVITIES with lots of interaction in English about a topic, e.g. Stanley Park Nature Tour
  • A $50 PREPARATION ALLOWANCE (maximum) will be provided to cover SUPPLIES and PREPARATION COSTS
  • Your ACTIVITY DESIGN responsibilities will be highlighted on your REFERENCE LETTER


If you are interested, please write a short proposal. Currently, SATURDAY AUGUST 3 and SATURDAY AUGUST 10 are open for ACTIVITIES.



HOW TO APPLY

NO EXPERIENCE EXPECTED!



We want this to be informal and fun for you and the students. All ages, including younger applicants are welcome! (Minors require written permission from a parent or guardian.)




REQUIREMENTS



  • Must be friendly and talkative
  • Fluent English is required, North American English is preferred, as that is what the students are learning
  • Punctuality and reliability is required (reference letters, commuting & prep allowances will not be provided for late or no-shows)
  • No possession or influence of any drug or alcohol is permitted (legal or otherwise) during any CLASS or ACTIVITY
